This position is focused on development of the role of biocatalysis as a synthetic approach for asymmetric synthesis especially for pharmaceutical application. The successful  candidate must show evidence of research excellence in synthetic organic chemistry including publications and will ideally have experience in the use of biotransformations in organic synthesis. The postdoctoral researcher will work together with the PhD students working on the project, in particular collaborating with Professor O’Gara’s research team in Microbiology, UCC.

The successful candidate will specifically be responsible for the development of the project as a foundation for application of bio transformations in industry and will liaise closely with the SSPC and with industry partners. Relevant experience would be an advantage.


  • A PhD qualification.

  • Appropriate research experience in synthetic organic chemistry.

  • Experience in use of biocatalysis is desirable but not essential.

  • Appropriate technical competence and accomplishment.

  • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.

  • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.

  • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.

  • Ability to work well within a team.

  • Please note that Garda vetting and international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.
